Elements of a graphic novel

An introduction to Manga – The British Museum Blog

The first thing I notice when I began reading the graphic novel, One Piece, the story begins from right to left like the traditional Japanese books, reverse from the American way left to right. Another thing I enjoy is the artist’s technique and style to enrich the artwork and hard workshop. For example, the whole graphic novel is black and white, however, each detail has this “popping” effect without using colors. I even enjoy that the artist added sound effects by using different fonts and ways to write it to have a “voice”. Another thing is the way the panels are put out making it easy for the reader to follow. The panels also come in various sizes, but each one is very detailed with the artwork even the tiniest panels. My favorite parts about the panels are the prospective panel the artist makes, even the pannel shapes play a role in the perspective, which helps manipulated and produce emotional states for the reader.
